Early Environmental Policy

.
Cholera is an infectious disease that is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae and is often fatal. This disease is contracted through unhealthy drinking water (water with fecal contaminants), or sometimes spread through foods. Early in the 1800's, pandemics were occurring and million of people were dying without full explanation until Filippo Pacini discovered the microorganism that cause Cholera. This lead to how it was spread, and led to the what I believe is the oldest environmental policy.
Environmental Policy was probably not the term used back in the 1800's when it became known that drinking water sources need to be protected from fecal contaminants. The term most likely used was environmental protection in the sense that we were protecting ourselves from being harmed by contaminated water. For one to wash themselves, clothes, dishes and even defecate the same water that we drink from was a lesson learned and not to be repeated. The pandemics that occurred from Cholera has forced us to pay close attention to what we do to our environment.
